I intentionally avoided this book until it was longlisted for the Booker Prize. The new take on classic never worked for me because most of the time I didn’t read the original to begin with. This is an exception and I enjoyed it.
The parallel story telling made the book more enjoyable, especially for me, who hasn’t read the story yet. Is it history or is it romanticized fictionalization of the past? The history part was very well written, both the story and history.
Contemporary story is very up to the world affair. You will encountered so many new trends and anecdotes. It tells that Winterson is very much well and alive keeping. It could be tricky, but she delivered with great finesse. All the characters who have their evil or dark sides are all very likable, which is weird. Ron Lord is funny. Victor is hard to read but didn’t seem to hold any malice. You will the current story uses the names from the classic. They also have a reason I guess.
