I have to say, Slow Horses is about the slowest book I have ever read. It was torture trying to get through the first 80% and after that it still dragged. I thought it might be just me, but went back and read some other reviews and now know I am not insane -other felt the same as me.

The only thing this book is good for is as a lesson on how not to write. I made it a third of the way through and threw in the towel.

Some times the author names them by last name; next time nickname; then maybe first name, or heck, even middle name, you’ll spend your time reading this and wondering whose who and what the hell is happening.

I read about one fourth of the book and decided to stop my self torture. I know that it comes with glowing recommendations and therefore it is possible that it is a great book. You should judge by yourselves. I found it slow, boring and ugly plus somewhat confusing.

Some of the worst writing ever published. This guy is no Le Carré, in case the absurd raves led you to believe otherwise. So bad it’s not only trite but tediously punishing to read. You wanna take a red pen and demolish most of it. Incredible the publisher thought such sub-standard prose was print-ready. Or was it beyond repair? It’s certainly beyond no style. It’s borderline illiterate.

This is a horribly mediocre read in all respects noted here. I wish I’d read these reviews before buying this book, through which I’d hope to find a likeable new (to me) series. I only disagree with one reviewer here: Invoking the comparison to LeCarre is an insult to the latter.

‘Slow Horses’ is a miserably slow developing story that is thin on plot. It is written in voluminous ‘patches’ of repetitious information that go on for pages about the characters in the story. The author’s abundant use of pronouns and frequent change of ‘scene’ makes the story difficult to follow. It seems as though a key note of the author’s style is obfuscation of the story line. Reading this is like slogging through thick, knee deep mud.

…I am a huge book reader…..and I always read the whole book…but not this one…..it jumps around with no warning from one paragraph to the next……I’m always trying to figure out who the character is that he is using because of the jumping……I couldn’t get a feel for the characters and they did things that were unusual and never was explained…….maybe the ending was good…I don’t know….never got there….it was SLOOOOOW horses for sure….!
